4(a) The organism in the environment (4BI1 specification)
Sampling a habitat properly, and the vocabulary ecology depends on.
Learn it on Incandio
The 2 Incandio pages that teach this — each explained in full, then proved in marked questions, taught back to an AI pupil and defended in a debate. Completely free.
- Populations, Ecosystems and Sampling with Quadrats — Four nested words for where organisms live — and how to count a population you could never count in full.
- Biodiversity, Distribution and Limiting Factors — Why organisms are where they are and not somewhere else — and how to measure the variety of life in a place rather than just its quantity.
The teaching route this belongs to: Topic 4 · Ecology and the environment (Biology) — the lessons in order, with every gate.
Specification coverage
Topic 4 Ecology and the environment (a) The organism in the environment — statements 4.1–4.4
Assessment objectives: AO1, AO2, AO3. Suggested learning time: 60 minutes.
Required knowledge
- The terms population, community, habitat and ecosystem
- The use of quadrats to estimate population size
- How to sample randomly and why randomness matters
Required skills
- Estimate a population from quadrat data
- Explain how sampling bias would affect a result
- Use a transect to investigate distribution along an environmental gradient
- Describe and evaluate the required practical: Investigate the population size of an organism in two different areas using quadrats.
How it is examined
- Multiple-choice and short-answer recall
- Application of the content to an unfamiliar context
- Extended open-response, marked on the quality of a connected explanation
- Practical questions on method, variables, data and sources of error
Common mistakes
- Throwing quadrats 'randomly' by hand, which is not random. Random number coordinates are the specified method.
- Presenting an estimate as an exact figure. It is an estimate, and saying so is part of the answer.
