Specification coverage
Component 2, Section B — Literary Heritage Texts (or Component 3, Assignment B)
Assessment objectives: AO1, AO2, AO4. Suggested learning time: 300 minutes.
Required knowledge
- The whole play — this is not an extract-based paper
- The context of the mid-1590s: fathers' authority over their daughters' marriages, the honour code of the street, the Petrarchan love fashion, and common belief that the stars shaped lives
- Shakespeare's compression of his source, Arthur Brooke's poem of 1562, from months into a few days
- The play's structural turn in Act 3 Scene 1, from romantic comedy to tragedy
Required skills
- Demonstrate a close understanding of the heritage text
- Analyse language, form and structure and their effects
- Understand the influence of contextual factors on interpretation
- Present an informed personal engagement in a critical style
How it is examined
- One 30-mark essay from a choice of two, character-led or theme-led
Common mistakes
- Blaming everything on fate. The Prologue announces the ending, but the play shows it being produced by choices and by haste.
- Writing Elizabethan context as a separate block of history rather than using it to change a reading.
- Forgetting that Section B assesses AO4 while Section A does not — and writing two identical essays.
- Assuming an extract will be provided. On this specification it will not: Component 2 is a whole-text open-book essay, and courses that print an extract are a different examination.
- Quoting long speeches because the book is open. Long quotations eat time and earn nothing extra.
