Reading an unseen poem under exam conditions (4ET1 specification)
A repeatable twenty-five-minute method for a poem you have never met, built around the one thing Section A credits: AO2.
Specification coverage
Component 1, Section A — Unseen Poetry
Assessment objectives: AO2. Suggested learning time: 45 minutes.
Required knowledge
- Section A is worth 20 marks and assesses AO2 only
- The poem is printed in the question paper
- The specification requires you to understand how writers create effects through imagery, descriptive skill, language choice, tone, mood, structure and form
Required skills
- Identify form and structure quickly on an unfamiliar poem
- Use literary terminology accurately and only where it earns something
- Select relevant short examples and analyse their effect
How it is examined
- One compulsory 20-mark essay on the meaning and effects created in an unseen poem
Common mistakes
- Feature-spotting: listing alliteration, similes and enjambment without saying what any of it achieves. This caps an answer low regardless of how many terms appear.
- Writing about what the poem 'is about' for two paragraphs before touching the language.
- Bringing in context. Section A does not credit it.
- Running long. Section A is 20 marks; Section C is 40. Time spent here is taken from a section worth twice as much.
