Russia 4 — The Bolshevik consolidation of power and the Civil War (4HI1 specification)
The Civil War made the Soviet state: one-party rule, the Cheka, requisitioning and rule by decree were all emergency measures that outlived the emergency.

Specification coverage
Paper 2, Section A — A2 Russia and the Soviet Union, 1905–24, key topic 4
Assessment objectives: AO1, AO3, AO4. Suggested learning time: 90 minutes.
Required knowledge
- Bolshevik consolidation of power, including the significance of the 1917 Decrees, the closure of the Constituent Assembly and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
- The two sides in the Civil War
- Key events and reasons for Bolshevik victory
Required skills
- Explain and analyse using second-order concepts: causation, consequence, change, continuity, similarity, difference and significance
- Cross-refer two sources and judge how far one supports the other (AO3)
- Evaluate an interpretation extract against your own knowledge (AO3 and AO4)
- Reach a supported judgement rather than describing events
How it is examined
- (a) 6 marks — “Describe TWO features of…” (AO1)
- (b) 8 marks — “How far does Source A support the evidence of Source B about…?” (AO3)
- (c) 16 marks — an interpretation extract, “How far do you agree with this interpretation?” (AO3 10, AO4 6)
Common mistakes
- Saying the Bolsheviks won because the Whites were divided. That is one reason among several: interior lines, the railways and Trotsky's army are the others.
- Passing over Brest-Litovsk as merely a treaty. It cost a third of European Russia's population and split the party, and it is why the Left SRs left the government.
- Treating the Constituent Assembly as a detail. The Bolsheviks lost that election and closed the assembly after one day, which is the sharpest single piece of evidence in the option.
