The characters
- The speaker — The accused who takes over the courtroom — a whole voice answering half a word
The themes
- Identity against definition — The poem’s war is over who gets to define a person: the label from outside, or the voice from within. Its answer is total — the label is demolished, and the self is re-authored as a story only its owner can tell.
- Laughter as weapon — The poem’s sharpest instrument is comedy — mock apology, absurd literalism, bathos, escalating farce — and the laughter is never relief: every laugh is a concession extracted from the listener, until the jokes stop and the silence does the striking.
- Creole as proof — The poem defends a mixed man in a mixed language — Guyanese Creole spelling and rhythm carrying a watertight argument — so the voice itself is evidence: nothing ‘half’ ever argued this whole.
- Mixture makes the masterpiece — Canvas, sky, symphony: the poem’s three witnesses argue that mixing is not dilution but creation — every revered thing the accuser’s culture owns is made of combined halves.
- Halves and wholes — The poem is an argument about arithmetic: who is half, what is whole, and who does the counting. By the end, ‘half’ has changed owners — it measures the listener’s attention, never the speaker’s ancestry.
