The motion: “The shell model of the atom describes what an atom is actually like.”

Bohr proposed the model you were taught, and abandoned it himself. You get to ask him why.
What you are asked to argue
Question Bohr, then name precisely what your questions have exposed about what a scientific model claims.
What the specification expects you to bring
- The structure required by the specification: protons, neutrons, electrons, shells, atomic number and mass number
- Electronic configuration and how it explains group behaviour
- What the shell model explains: periodicity, ion formation, bonding
- What it does not: why shells hold the numbers they do, and what an electron's position means
Positions that are defensible
Disagreeing with the figure is not an error. Any of these can score full marks if argued well:
- That a model that predicts correctly is as much 'what an atom is like' as science can offer
- That the shell model is an approximation whose limits do not matter at this level, and saying so is honest
Common misconceptions this debate is built to expose
- Wrong: Electrons orbit the nucleus like planets round the sun.
The correction: The orbit picture fails: an orbiting charge would radiate energy and spiral in. The shells describe permitted energies, not paths. - Wrong: A scientific model is either true or false.
The correction: A model is judged by what it explains and where it breaks. The shell model is enormously useful and known to be incomplete, and both statements are correct at once.
What passing it proves
