The Agora

The lesson teaches. Practice proves you can answer. Teaching proves you can explain. The debate proves you can defend it. The Agora is where the Defend stage of every Incandio topic happens — a place to challenge ideas on the course, not a chat with the past.

In the Agora you argue a specification-mapped motion against the figure with the strongest genuine claim on it — Shakespeare on Macbeth, Priestley on responsibility, Darwin on natural selection, Turing on what counts as a proof. Every debate runs in structured rounds with a changing objective, is marked against published descriptors you can read before you enter, and produces evidence the Grade Engine records.

It is not a chatbot. The figure argues; it never decides. Your score, your rank, your topic mastery and any movement in your working-at estimate are computed from the round-by-round marks by rules that are printed in full in the app.

The debate formats

• Argument Duel — You and the figure take opposing positions and fight for the motion. The complete test: build a case, evidence it, survive attack, attack back, weigh the other side, and land a judgement. Every dimension is in play.
• Cross-Examination — You question the figure — and must expose what their position cannot answer. Tests whether you know a topic well enough to know where its weak points are. Asking the right question is harder than answering one.
• Defend the Figure — Defend a decision or a reading while it is attacked from every side. Tests sustained defence under pressure. You cannot retreat to a new position each round — you must hold one and make it survive.
• Challenge the Master — They argue first. You must defeat it, cold. Tests whether you can think without preparation — the skill an unseen question actually asks for.
• Reverse Position — Argue the side you would not choose — and argue it well. The strongest evidence of real understanding: you cannot argue a position honestly until you understand why anyone holds it. Directly trains the 'alternative interpretations' objective.
• Evidence Battle — Both sides table evidence. You must show why yours is stronger. Tests the difference between HAVING evidence and USING it — selection, accuracy, and the argument for why one piece outweighs another.
• Interpretation Clash — Two readings of the same text. Only one of you can be more persuasive. Literature's real question is never 'what happens' but 'what does the writing do'. This format refuses to reward plot.
• Historical Judgement — Several causes. You must weigh them and defend which mattered most. Knowing what happened is not history. This format marks the weighing — and refuses a list of causes with no judgement between them.
• Scientific Defence — Defend the explanation against the misconceptions that sound reasonable. Tests mechanism over vocabulary. A learner who can name a process but not say what causes what will be found out here.
• Proof Duel — State the method. Justify it. Then find the flaw in theirs. Being able to DO a method proves very little. This format only rewards knowing why it must work — and spotting when it does not.
• Panel Debate — Several figures, genuinely at odds with each other — and with you. The hardest test of all: you must hold one position against several incompatible ones, and understand each well enough to say what it gets right.
