What you are asked to argue
Defeat the motion by identifying what induction actually requires, then apply it to a generator.
What the specification expects you to bring
- Electromagnetic induction and the requirement for a CHANGING field
- The factors affecting the induced voltage: speed, number of turns, field strength
- Direction reversal on reversing the motion
- The generator and the transformer as applications
Positions that are defensible
Disagreeing with the figure is not an error. Any of these can score full marks if argued well:
- That relative motion is what matters, so moving the coil rather than the magnet is equally correct — and saying so is a strength
- That the motion is true for an ALTERNATING field with the magnet stationary, which is a precise and creditable correction rather than an error
- That what matters is the flux through the circuit, so changing the circuit's area or orientation works as well as moving the magnet
Common misconceptions this debate is built to expose
- Wrong: A magnet near a wire produces a current.
The correction: Only a CHANGE in the magnetic field through the circuit induces a voltage. A stationary magnet produces nothing, however strong. - Wrong: A transformer works with a battery.
The correction: A steady direct current produces a steady field and therefore no change and no induced voltage in the secondary. Transformers require alternating current.
