What you are asked to argue
You must defeat the argument Galileo puts to you, using velocity, displacement and frames of reference correctly.
What the specification expects you to bring
- Distance and displacement, speed and velocity
- The idea of motion relative to a reference point
- Interpreting distance–time and velocity–time graphs
- Acceleration as detectable in a way that constant velocity is not
Positions that are defensible
Disagreeing with the figure is not an error. Any of these can score full marks if argued well:
- That acceleration IS detectable from inside, so the motion is real in that case — a genuinely strong answer
- That for the purposes of this specification a reference point is always stated, which dissolves the puzzle practically
Common misconceptions this debate is built to expose
- Wrong: Speed and velocity are the same thing.
The correction: Velocity carries direction. An object moving in a circle at constant speed has continuously changing velocity — and is therefore accelerating. - Wrong: You can state an object's velocity without saying relative to what.
The correction: Every velocity is relative to something. In ordinary problems the ground is assumed, but the assumption is doing real work.
