Positions that are defensible
Disagreeing with the figure is not an error. Any of these can score full marks if argued well:
- That the observation was necessary and the development sufficient, so neither is 'decisive' alone
- That the war, not any individual, was the decisive factor in scaling production
- That the story is a case study in why the lone-genius model of discovery is misleading
Common misconceptions this debate is built to expose
- Wrong: Fleming invented penicillin and it immediately saved lives.
The correction: He observed an effect in 1928. Florey and Chain purified it from 1938, and American mass production made it usable at scale during the war. - Wrong: It was pure luck.
The correction: Chance favours the prepared mind — the observation mattered because a bacteriologist was looking at the plate. But preparation did not solve purification, and that is the real lesson.
