Where Darwin appears in your course
Charles Darwin has a genuine claim on 13 lessons of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE science course built into Incandio. Six of them:
- The Four Eukaryote Groups — Biology: You have just learned that organisms sort neatly into groups with shared features. Darwin's explanation for WHY that pattern exists — common ancestry — is what turns classification from filing into biology, and it is why the groups nest inside one another.
- Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport — Biology: For fifteen years Darwin experimented on sundews, placing their leaves in solutions of every strength and salt he could obtain and watching under a microscope as the contents of the cells drew together and the cells lost their firmness. That is your potato practical performed on living tissue, and it forced him to work out what could cross a living membrane and what could not.
- The Leaf: Structure and Gas Exchange — Biology: Darwin spent years placing substances onto living leaves and watching under a microscope to see whether anything actually crossed into the cells — work that filled an entire book on insectivorous plants. That is precisely the question this lesson asks about a leaf surface, and he answered it by experiment rather than by inspecting the structure and guessing.
- Plant Responses, Tropisms and Auxin — Biology: The experiment on this page is his. In 1880, with his son Francis, Darwin covered the tips of grass seedlings and showed that a plant detects light in one place and bends in another — which forced the conclusion that a message travels between them. He went further than most people realise, writing that the tip of a root acts like the brain of one of the lower animals. He never identified the substance; he proved there had to be one.
- Sexual and Asexual Reproduction — Biology: The costs of sexual reproduction listed on this page are real — two parents, slower, dependent on a pollinator arriving — and Darwin supplies the reason they are worth paying. His argument is that where offspring vary, some will by chance be better suited to conditions as they change, and those are the ones that survive to reproduce. Without variation there is nothing for that process to act on, which is precisely why a purely asexual population is defenceless against a new disease. He also spent years on the reproductive arrangements of orchids and primroses, largely to work out what all that machinery was avoiding.
- Flowers, Pollination and Fertilisation — Biology: Darwin spent years on flowers — a whole book on how orchids are fertilised by insects, another on the different forms of primrose — and he was not cataloguing. He was pursuing one question: why do so many flowers have elaborate arrangements that make self-pollination difficult, when self-pollination would be so much easier? His answer is the last section of this page. He also ran the experiment: over a decade he raised plants from self-pollination and from cross-pollination side by side and measured them, and the cross-pollinated offspring were consistently taller and stronger.
