Who was Eisenhower?

Born in Texas in 1890 and raised in Abilene, Eisenhower was a staff officer who never held a combat command before being made Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. As President from January 1953 he ended the Korean war, refused to condemn Joseph McCarthy in public on the ground that he would not get into the gutter with him, and in September 1957 sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock — not to endorse desegregation but because a governor had defied a federal court. He built the interstate highway system, watched the Paris summit collapse in May 1960 after the U2 was shot down, and used his farewell address in January 1961 to warn about the military-industrial complex he had spent eight years funding.
