Who was Katherine?
Katherine Johnson was a mathematical prodigy from White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, who finished high school at fourteen and college at eighteen. In 1953 she joined the segregated West Area Computing unit of the NACA — soon NASA — at Langley, where Black women 'computers' worked apart from white staff. Her brilliance moved her into the engineering teams: she calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard's 1961 suborbital flight, and when John Glenn prepared to orbit the Earth in 1962, he asked that 'the girl' check by hand the numbers the electronic computer had produced — he would fly only once she confirmed them. She worked the mathematics of the Apollo Moon landings and the safe return of the crippled Apollo 13. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and lived to 101.

In that work a velocity with the right magnitude and the wrong direction is not a small error — it is a spacecraft that never comes home, which is the most literal demonstration there is of why a vector is not just a number.
- Momentum — Physics: Spaceflight is momentum arithmetic and nothing else: a rocket gains momentum only by throwing mass backwards, a capsule changes orbit only by changing its momentum, and a re-entry is the controlled destruction of an enormous quantity of it. Johnson calculated those trajectories by hand at NASA, and when the electronic computers produced the numbers for John Glenn's flight he asked for her to check them before he would fly. She is the person on this page who knows what it means for the calculation to be the safety feature.
