If— — Rudyard Kipling (4ET1 specification)
A father's conditional advice to a son: an entire poem held in suspension by the word 'if', which only resolves in the final two lines.
Specification coverage
Component 1, Section B — Anthology Poetry (Part 3 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology)
Assessment objectives: AO2, AO3. Suggested learning time: 60 minutes.
Required knowledge
- Published 1910; written in the confidence of late Victorian and Edwardian imperial Britain
- The whole poem is one grammatical sentence — the main clause is withheld until the last two lines
- Its virtues are stoic: self-command, endurance, indifference to both triumph and disaster
Required skills
- Analyse how language, form and structure create meanings and effects (AO2)
- Compare this poem with another from Part 3, including language, structure and form (AO3)
- Use appropriate literary terminology accurately
- Select relevant, short examples from the poem — it is printed in the paper, so precision is expected
How it is examined
- One 30-mark comparative essay, from a choice of two, comparing this poem with one other from Part 3
Common mistakes
- Treating the poem as a list of nice advice. The examiner rewards the structural point: it is one suspended sentence, and the suspension IS the meaning.
- Reading it as uncomplicated. A strong answer can note that the ideal it prescribes — total emotional restraint — is also a demand a reader may resist.
