If your school enters you for Component 3 (coursework) (4ET1 specification)
Component 3 replaces the Component 2 exam with two internally assessed assignments — and its mark split is different from the exam's.
Specification coverage
Component 3 — Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts (non-examined assessment)
Assessment objectives: AO1, AO2, AO4. Suggested learning time: 35 minutes.
Required knowledge
- Component 3 is internally assessed and externally moderated by Pearson, and is worth 40% — the same as Component 2
- Assignment A (Modern Drama) is marked out of 30: 15 marks AO1 and 15 marks AO2
- Assignment B (Literary Heritage) is marked out of 30: 10 marks AO1, 10 marks AO2 and 10 marks AO4
- Assignments are devised by your teacher on your studied texts
Required skills
- Plan and draft an extended essay to a brief rather than to a timed question
- Balance the three assessment objectives to the stated mark split
How it is examined
- Two teacher-devised 30-mark essay assignments
Common mistakes
- Writing both assignments in the same shape when their mark splits differ.
- Assuming coursework is easier. It is externally moderated against the same standards.
- Taking exam advice for Component 2 and applying it to Component 3 without adjusting for the mark split.
