- Column vector notation for translations
- Higher: addition and subtraction of vectors, scalar multiples, and the magnitude of a vector
- Higher: using vectors to prove that lines are parallel or that points are collinear
Required skills
- Describe a transformation completely — an incomplete description earns nothing
- Perform an enlargement with a negative or fractional scale factor (Higher)
- Express a path around a shape as a sum of vectors (Higher)
How it is examined
- Structured questions building from a routine start to a multi-step finish
- Problem-solving questions with no method given
- 'Show that' and reasoning questions where the working IS the answer
Common mistakes
- Describing a rotation without all three of angle, direction and centre. All three are required or the mark is lost entirely.
- Describing an enlargement without the centre.
- Getting the direction of a vector backwards. AB is 'B minus A', which is the opposite of what most learners write first.
