Religious Studies command words — what each question is worth

5 command words, each with exactly one tariff. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Religious Studies (4RS1) is the one specification Incandio teaches that publishes its command words together with the marks they carry, so on this course a command word is not a hint about how much to write — it is the instruction, and the number never varies.

Assessed on Paper 1 (4RS1/01) and Paper 2 (4RS1/2A-2F). The two papers run different tariff profiles, so the same word can open a question in either and still mean one thing.

The 5 words

Identify — 3 marks
three separate creditable points, recalled — development earns nothing here Where the marks go: treating it as a short Explain and developing one point instead of giving three
Outline — 4 marks
two points, each developed once — a mark for the point and a mark for its development Where the marks go: listing four points, when the third and fourth earn nothing and the development marks go unclaimed
Explain — 6 marks
a developed understanding: reasons, in the religion's own vocabulary, with their significance made explicit Where the marks go: accurate description with no analysis of significance, which cannot reach the top band however correct it is
Discuss — 10 marks
teachings, divergent views, a reasoned personal view and a balanced conclusion — all four are printed on the paper Where the marks go: an answer for and against with no conclusion, leaving one of the four printed requirements unmet
Evaluate — 12 marks
different points of view weighed, reference to at least one religion, and a justified conclusion the argument actually supports Where the marks go: writing everything known about the topic instead of arguing about the statement printed above it

The words that are NOT on this paper

“Describe”, “assess”, “to what extent” and “compare” appear on other qualifications and other boards. They are not Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Religious Studies Religious Studies commands, and a revision resource that drills them is drilling the wrong exam.

Then practise them on a topic

Every Religious Studies unit on Incandio ends the same way: learn it, teach it to an AI pupil who asks the awkward question, then defend it in a marked debate — and its exam practice asks these five commands on that unit's own material.
