Education and ignorance in Animal Farm — theme analysis
Animal Farm · George Orwell · Set text on AQA GCSE English Literature (8702) — Modern texts option; not on Pearson Edexcel International GCSE (4ET1) · Grade 9 Notes
In one sentence. Every fraud in the novella passes through writing, and almost nobody on the farm can read. Orwell makes literacy the real currency of power — more decisive than strength, numbers or even violence — and shows an elite protecting its monopoly while appearing to share it.
This study ends with George Orwell. Build your reading of Education and ignorance in Animal Farm, teach it, then defend it against George Orwell.
How Education, literacy and ignorance works in Animal Farm
Chapter 3's reading classes are the theme in miniature and reward close attention: the pigs read 'perfectly'; the dogs learn to read but care for nothing except the Commandments; Muriel reads 'somewhat better than the dogs'; Clover 'could not put words together'; Boxer 'get beyond the letter D'; Mollie learns only the six letters of her own name; and the sheep, hens and ducks cannot learn the Seven Commandments at all — which is why they are reduced for them to a single maxim. Orwell distributes literacy in exactly the pattern that will determine the plot.
“get beyond the letter D.” — Narrator, of Boxer, Chapter 3
A comic detail that turns out to be a death sentence. Orwell plants it six chapters before the knacker's van, so that the reader who remembers it experiences Chapter 9 as consequence rather than accident. 'Beyond' does quiet thematic work: literacy here is a distance, and everything the regime does — Commandments, minutes, figures, lettering on a van — happens past the point where Boxer's alphabet stops.
Methods: proleptic detail · bathos · motif of the unread text
The pigs' cleverest move is to make the monopoly look like service: they teach the classes, they read the Commandments aloud, they keep the minutes, they publish the figures. Orwell's point is that a population which outsources verification has already surrendered, whatever rights it retains on paper — the animals are never forbidden to read the wall; they simply cannot, and then simply do not.
Grade 9 insight. Grade 9 pairing: put Boxer's letter D beside Benjamin's refusal to read. One cannot check the record; the other can and will not. Orwell thereby denies the comfortable conclusion that education alone protects a society — literacy without the will to use it publicly is, in the fable's arithmetic, worth exactly nothing.
Soviet literacy and its limits. The Bolsheviks ran genuine mass-literacy campaigns in the 1920s, and Orwell's satire is not that education was withheld outright but that access to real information was: newspapers, archives, statistics and history were all Party-controlled. The farm reproduces that structure — classes for everyone, records for the pigs.

The characters who carry Education, literacy and ignorance
An essay on Education, literacy and ignorance is built from the characters. Each line below is from that character's own study — follow it for the full analysis.
- Boxer — the letter D and the van sign frame the whole theme; pair them.
- Squealer — his success is calibrated to his audience's illiteracy — pair the paint-pot scene with the animals' inability to read it.
- Benjamin — he is the theme's control experiment — literacy without action, proving ignorance was never the whole problem.
