Disagreeing with the figure is not an error. Any of these can score full marks if argued well:
- That the two are inseparable — the statistics forced the reforms the nursing embodied
- That her greatest contribution was administrative rather than either
- That the sanitary commission's engineers, not her diagrams, cut the Scutari deaths
Common misconceptions this debate is built to expose
- Wrong: Nightingale's importance is that she nursed soldiers at Scutari.
The correction: The mortality at Scutari FELL after the sanitary commission dug out the drains, not because of nursing alone. Her lasting influence runs through statistics, administration and training. - Wrong: Nightingale accepted germ theory.
The correction: She held to miasma theory for years and resisted germ theory. Her sanitary reforms worked anyway — which is a genuinely interesting problem for the history of science.
