- What Limits Photosynthesis — Biology: This practical changes light intensity by moving a lamp, and every conclusion drawn from it depends on knowing that intensity falls with the SQUARE of the distance rather than in proportion to it. Kepler was the first to state that rule, in 1604, and he reached it not by measuring brightness — which nobody could do then — but by reasoning about light spreading over the surface of an expanding sphere.
- The Eye — Focusing, and the Pupil Reflex — Biology: Before Kepler, nobody had a correct account of what happens inside an eye — the leading view placed vision in the lens itself, because an image on the retina would have to be upside down and that seemed impossible. In 1604 Kepler treated the eye as an optical instrument like any other, traced the rays through the cornea and lens, and showed that they form a real, inverted image on the retina, whose job is simply to receive it. He also said plainly that what happens afterwards was not his problem but the physiologists', which is the honest boundary this lesson sits on.
- Total Internal Reflection — Physics: Kepler is remembered for planetary orbits, but in 1611 he published Dioptrice, a study of how light passes through lenses, written to explain why Galileo's telescope worked. In the course of it he described total internal reflection — light striking a glass–air boundary from inside at a sufficiently steep angle and failing to emerge at all. He also searched for the law of refraction and did not find it, arriving at an approximation that works only for small angles, which places him precisely between Ibn al-Haytham's negative result and Snell's positive one.
- Orbits — Physics: Statement 8.5 depends on orbits being ellipses rather than circles, and that took Kepler about eight years of calculation on Tycho Brahe's observations of Mars to accept. He began convinced, as everyone was, that heavenly motion must be built from perfect circles, and his best circular model fitted the data to within eight minutes of arc — an error most astronomers would have shrugged off. He refused to, on the grounds that Tycho's measurements were better than that, and followed the discrepancy until it destroyed the assumption he had started with. He is the right person to ask what it costs to trust a small disagreement.
- The Hertzsprung–Russell Diagram — Physics: The whole point of this diagram is that plotting two measured quantities against each other exposes structure invisible in either alone, and Kepler is the first person to have done that decisively. His third law came from comparing each planet's distance from the Sun with its orbital period and searching for a relationship between the two columns — years of arithmetic on a table of numbers, looking for a pattern that nobody had reason to expect. He is the right second figure here because a learner meeting the HR diagram should see it as an instance of a method rather than a fact about stars.
