- What Makes Something Alive — Biology: The checklist you have just learned descends from Aristotle's. He was the first to argue that living things are defined by their FUNCTIONS — nutrition, growth, sensation, reproduction — rather than by what they are made of, which is exactly the move this lesson makes.
- The Four Eukaryote Groups — Biology: Aristotle produced the first systematic classification of living things, grouping hundreds of species by their observable features — blood, reproduction, habitat. His categories were often wrong, but the method of grouping by shared characteristics is the one you have just used.
- Photosynthesis — Biology: Aristotle taught that a plant draws ready-made food out of the earth through its roots, and because that idea is so intuitive it went essentially unchallenged until van Helmont weighed his willow. Understanding why such a reasonable answer survived for two millennia tells you exactly what the experiment in this lesson had to overturn — and why the real answer sounds so implausible at first hearing.
- The Alimentary Canal — Biology: Aristotle dissected and described the digestive systems of a very large number of species and noticed that the shape of the gut tracks what the animal eats — long and complicated in animals that live on plants, short and simple in those that eat flesh. That is structure explained by function, and it is the reasoning this lesson asks you to apply to a single human tube.
- Respiration and ATP — Biology: Aristotle taught that the heart was the seat of the body's innate heat and that breathing existed to cool it, like bellows working in reverse. It is wrong, but it is a serious attempt to explain a real observation — respiring bodies genuinely are warm — and arguing with it is the sharpest way to separate breathing from respiration, which is the distinction this lesson turns on.
- Why Transport Systems Exist, and the Two Plant Vessels — Biology: Aristotle held that a plant takes ready-made nourishment directly from the soil through its roots, so it needs no organs for distributing it — the roots were, in his phrase, a plant's mouth. That is a coherent position, and it is precisely what has to be false for this lesson to be true: it explains why the existence of two separate plant transport systems took so long to establish.
