Aristotle studied under Plato, tutored Alexander the Great, and founded his own school in Athens. More than almost anyone, he shaped how the Western world thought for the next two thousand years. These five chapters follow his path from a doctor's son in the north of Greece to the thinker later ages simply called 'the Philosopher'.

Chapter 1 · A Doctor's Son

Curiosity from the northern edge of Greece

384 – 367 BC · Stagira · Macedon

Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Stagira, a small Greek city in the north near the kingdom of Macedon. His father was a physician who served the Macedonian royal court, and although his parents died when he was young, this background may help explain the direction of his mind. Medicine in the ancient world meant careful observation of the body, of symptoms, of how things actually behaved — and observation would become the hallmark of Aristotle's thought.

Where his later teacher Plato was drawn to abstract, perfect ideals beyond the physical world, Aristotle was fascinated by the world itself: living creatures, changing weather, the structure of societies. He wanted to look closely, gather examples, and find the patterns within them.

Around the age of seventeen, Aristotle was sent to Athens, the intellectual capital of the Greek world, to continue his education. There he joined the most famous school of the age — Plato's Academy. He could not have known it, but he would remain there for two decades, absorbing everything Plato had to teach and gradually developing ideas of his own that would eventually pull him in a very different direction.

Chapter 2 · Twenty Years at Plato's Academy

Learning from a master, then disagreeing

367 – 347 BC · Athens

For about twenty years Aristotle studied and worked at Plato's Academy, the leading centre of philosophy in Greece. He was, by all accounts, a brilliant and hard-working student, and Plato reportedly called him 'the mind of the school'. Yet the longer he stayed, the more he found himself questioning his teacher's most important ideas.

Plato taught that the everyday world we see is only a shadow of a higher realm of perfect, unchanging 'Forms' — that there exists a perfect Form of a circle, of beauty, of justice, more real than any example we encounter. Aristotle respected this theory but came to reject it. For him, the properties of a thing were not located in some separate realm; they existed in the things themselves, to be discovered by studying real examples.

This disagreement was profound and respectful. A saying attributed to Aristotle captures it: he loved Plato, but he loved truth more. When Plato died in 347 BC, Aristotle left Athens — perhaps disappointed at not being chosen to lead the Academy, perhaps because rising anti-Macedonian feeling made the city uncomfortable for someone with his northern ties. Either way, he was ready to build a philosophy of his own.

Chapter 3 · Tutoring Alexander and Founding the Lyceum

Teaching a king, then teaching the world

343 – 335 BC · Macedon · Athens

After leaving Athens, Aristotle was invited by King Philip of Macedon to tutor his teenage son — the boy who would become Alexander the Great. For a few years the greatest thinker of the age instructed the future greatest conqueror. What exactly Aristotle taught Alexander is uncertain, but it likely included literature, politics and ethics, and it planted in the young prince a lasting admiration for Greek culture.

When Alexander began his conquests, Aristotle returned to Athens and, around 335 BC, founded his own school, the Lyceum. It was different in spirit from Plato's Academy. Aristotle and his students — nicknamed the 'Peripatetics', possibly because they discussed ideas while walking in the school's covered walkways — pursued research across an astonishing range of subjects.

The Lyceum gathered specimens, collected the constitutions of many Greek city-states, and studied everything from the anatomy of animals to the structure of dramas. Aristotle was effectively building the first systematic research programme in history, treating knowledge not as a single vision but as many fields, each to be investigated on its own terms. This was a new model of learning — one that separated biology from physics, ethics from logic — and it shaped how universities organise knowledge to this day.

Chapter 4 · Logic, the Golden Mean and the Good Life

Ideas that shaped how we reason and live

Aristotle's writings covered a vast range, but a few ideas stand out for their lasting power. He effectively invented the formal study of logic, working out how valid conclusions follow from premises — the rules of reasoning that underpin philosophy, science and law. For centuries, to study logic simply meant to study Aristotle.

In ethics, he asked what it means to live a good life. His answer was not a list of rules but a goal: *eudaimonia*, often translated as flourishing or living well. We reach it, he argued, by developing good character through practice and habit. Each virtue, he suggested, is a kind of balance between two extremes — courage sits between cowardice and recklessness, generosity between meanness and waste. This idea, the 'golden mean', encourages us to find the sensible middle path rather than swing to either extreme.

He also studied politics, comparing many real constitutions and asking what made a society just and stable. Throughout, his method was the same: gather evidence, define terms carefully, reason step by step. He did not always reach conclusions we would accept today — some of his views, including his acceptance of slavery and his claims about women, reflected and reinforced the prejudices of his time and are rightly rejected now. But his way of thinking systematically about hard questions changed intellectual life forever.

Chapter 5 · The Philosopher of the Ages

Authority, and the courage to question it

After Alexander died in 323 BC, anti-Macedonian feeling surged in Athens, and Aristotle — with his Macedonian connections — was charged with impiety, the same accusation that had condemned Socrates. Rather than face trial, he left the city, reportedly saying he would not let Athens 'sin twice against philosophy'. He died the following year.

His influence, though, was only beginning. His writings were preserved, studied, and eventually translated into Arabic and Latin. For much of the Middle Ages, in the Islamic world and in Christian Europe, Aristotle was such an authority that thinkers referred to him simply as 'the Philosopher'. His ideas shaped medieval science, theology and universities for a thousand years.

But here lies a paradox. Aristotle's authority became so great that later scholars sometimes accepted his conclusions instead of testing the world themselves — the very opposite of his own method. When the Scientific Revolution came, it advanced partly by challenging Aristotle's specific claims about physics and astronomy through fresh observation and experiment. In doing so, scientists were, in a sense, being more Aristotelian than the followers who had turned him into an unquestionable authority. His deepest legacy is not any single answer but the conviction that we should reason carefully from evidence — and keep questioning, even the greatest minds.

What Aristotle changed

Aristotle created the formal study of logic, pioneered the systematic investigation of the natural world, and shaped ethics, politics and science for more than two thousand years. The organisation of knowledge into distinct disciplines, taught in universities today, descends directly from his work at the Lyceum.

A debate that continues

Aristotle's towering authority is itself debated: did it advance knowledge, or did later reverence for 'the Philosopher' hold science back until thinkers dared to test his claims against fresh evidence?
