Leonardo da Vinci has a genuine claim on 10 lessons of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE science course built into Incandio. Six of them:
- Levels of Organisation — Biology: The top two rungs — organs and systems — were established by dissection, and Leonardo's anatomical drawings are among the first accurate records of them. He worked out the heart's structure and valves centuries before anyone could explain what they were for.
- Comparing Cells, and Stem Cells — Biology: Differentiation is a body becoming specialised from something unspecialised. Leonardo's studies of the fetus in the womb are among the first careful records of that process, drawn from dissection at a time when nobody could say how it happened.
- The Leaf: Structure and Gas Exchange — Biology: Leonardo dissected and drew plants as carefully as he drew bodies, and he was the first to record that leaves are set around a stem in a repeating spiral, so that each one shades the leaves below it as little as possible. That is the same argument this lesson makes about the palisade layer, made one level further out: structure arranged so that light is caught rather than wasted.
- The Alimentary Canal — Biology: Leonardo dissected around thirty human bodies and drew the digestive organs more accurately than anyone had before, working out the arrangement by following the tube itself rather than by trusting the textbooks of his day. That is exactly the exercise this lesson asks of you — and he did it knowing that what the authorities said was inside a body often was not.
- The Thorax and Ventilation — Biology: Leonardo dissected the human chest and drew the ribs, the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm as a mechanical system — he was trying to work out what moved what, in the way an engineer reads a machine. That is exactly the question this lesson asks, and he asked it four hundred years before anyone could measure the pressures involved.
- Water Uptake and Transpiration — Biology: Leonardo filled notebooks with the behaviour of water — how it flows, how it clings to surfaces, how it rises into narrow tubes and between grains of sand. He noticed that water pulls on itself, which is precisely the property that lets a continuous thread of it be hauled up a xylem vessel without breaking.
