How Reason and deduction works in The Sign of Four
Holmes reads Watson's watch, the soil on Watson's boots, the room at Pondicherry Lodge and the trail of creosote. His method is observation, inference and elimination, and the novel presents it as thrilling and modern. But reason is not enough for him: without a problem he turns to cocaine, and when Watson marries, Holmes is left with the bottle. The novel admires reason and doubts that it can make a whole life.
“Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science” — Holmes, Chapter 1
His creed in scientific language; the hedge 'or ought to be' admits it is an ideal.
Methods: scientific diction
Context that changes the reading. Late Victorian Britain trusted science and method. Conan Doyle trained as a doctor at Edinburgh, where close observation was taught as part of diagnosis; Holmes's method resembles a doctor's examination.
Use this in an essay. Frame: 'Conan Doyle makes Holmes the hero of reason and then shows him reaching for a needle, as if reason alone cannot satisfy the mind that serves it.'
