How love and reason works in The Sign of Four

Watson falls in love with Mary while Holmes analyses her case. Holmes praises her mind but says emotion is antagonistic to clear reasoning, and that he would never marry. The ending divides the rewards: Watson gets a wife, Jones the credit, Holmes the cocaine-bottle.

The love story is quiet but structural. It runs through the night journey, the vigil at Pondicherry Lodge and the chase, because Watson's anxiety about the treasure is an anxiety about Mary: a fortune would make her an heiress, and a half-pay army surgeon could not honourably court her. The empty box therefore becomes the happy ending. Love is the one value in the novel that the treasure cannot buy or corrupt, and the novel rewards the man who chose it.

Holmes's response is not hostile but limited. He admires Mary and even says she had a genius for detective work, but he cannot rejoice without explaining that love is opposed to true cold reason. Readers can see this as integrity or as loss; the last line, with its cocaine-bottle, leans towards loss.

“The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning.” — Holmes, Chapter 2

Holmes's verdict on Watson's admiration for Mary.

Methods: abstract diction

Context that changes the reading. Victorian ideals of marriage and domestic life were strong; Watson's engagement fulfils them, while Holmes stands outside them.

Use this in an essay. Frame: 'The novel gives Holmes the solution and Watson the happy ending, and asks which is the greater prize.'
